Submission Rules

We are pleased to announce that the 2021 Bloody Words Light Mystery Award (aka the Bony Blithe) “for books that make us smile” is now open to submissions.

This annual award, which includes a $1000 cash prize as well as a stunning trophy, is now in its 10th year. The 2021 award will be presented at the Bloody Words Mini-con/Bony Blithe Award Gala on May 28, 2021, in Toronto.

The award is open to any Canadian citizen or permanent resident and is for full-length (at least 60,000 words) mysteries published in the previous year. The 2021 award is for books published between January 1 and December 31, 2020. Books may be submitted by the publisher or the author. No YA or noir, please.

What is a “light mystery”?

“Light mysteries” include cozies, capers, satire, and humorous books – in short, anything from laugh-out-loud books to gentle humour to good old-fashioned stories with minimal overt violence or gore. We are not looking for books with gravitas; we are looking for books that are entertaining and fun to read.

Submission procedure

Send four (4) hard copies of the book(s) by December 18, 2020, to:

Chair, 2021 Bony Blithe Award

Toronto ON M5T 1J2

Please include a cover letter indicating the title(s) you are submitting, along with the publisher name and your name and email address.

You may start submitting books now. The book(s) must reach us by the December 18th deadline. If you do not expect the book back from the printer by December 18, 2020, you may send us four (4) copies of the ARC.

Note: If you are sending the book(s) from outside Canada, make sure the customs declaration states NCV (no commercial value) or $0 for the dollar value.

If your book is an e-book, contact us about submitting it electronically. Please be aware, however, that based on the judges’ preferences, we may require e-books as hard copy.
